Liz Pemberton, The Black Nursery Manager, presents 'Inclusion in Role Play for the Under 5's'.

Embedding cultures and diversity within an early years setting is a vital part of the EYFS. Children and their families will feel valued by the setting if resources and displays represent the ethnic, cultural and social diversity in society, and if they can see their own family background and culture represented as well as those of others. True inclusion means your setting will have diversity running through its core regardless of your current make-up of families on role.

Course Aim: To promote inclusive practice in the Early Years (under 5's) education sector, with a particular focus on how race, culture and anti-racism should be considered in this practice.

Course Information:  This 3 part course will ensure that all practitioners are critically engaging and thinking about the racial and cultural inclusivity of the role play spaces in their Early Years provisions. Whether their settings are predominantly or all white or extremely multicultural, the aim of these sessions is to ensure that seemingly ‘normalised practices’ are reassessed, reflected upon and changed to ensure that anti-racist practice is a thread that runs throughout the infrastructure of play. There are links to the EYFS ‘Enabling Environments’ and ‘People, Culture and Communities’ and practitioners will be left with solid and practical pointers that can be embedded in order to work towards decolonising their mindsets before they decolonise the play spaces.

Session 1 (20th January) Cultural Appropriation and ‘Dressing Up”

This session will take a deep dive into “dressing up” in the Early Years setting and help practitioners reflect on and take action to ensure that racist troupes are not perpetuated through play. This session will have a close examination of how to audit the dressing up box in the setting and will be contextualised by examining the history of “Yellowface” and “Blackface”  as well as an exploration into Pantomime. By the end of this session practitioners will have a deeper understanding about how harmful racist stereotyping is for children.

Session 2 (27th January) Language Matters

This session will explore how practitioners should support a positive cultural and racial identity for Black Caribbean, Black African, South Asian and East & South East Asian heritage children by examining their own language and tone. Looking at how COVID -19 has been weaponised against certain communities this session will pay close attention to the particular impacts on children and families of East & South East Asian heritage. Practitioners will be encouraged to reflect deeply on why their language matters and how observations during role play can extend future learning opportunities.

Session 3  (3rd February) The Home Corner

The diversification of the kitchen role play area is a great way to create an inclusive environment. It is an opportunity to acknowledge how food from around the world can support children’s learning about their own and others’ cultures. This session will examine the importance of inclusion for children and families from the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities and how the home corner can create a way for practitioners to make meaningful observations that can inform future learning opportunities. In addition to this, there will be an exploration into how practitioners can be consciously aware of how their own expectations of gender roles can be limiting for children during role play.
